High Cholesterol Levels Managed with these Five Foods

Cholesterol is a waxy substance derived from food.  Low-density lipoproteins, LDLs, are considered “bad” cholesterol, because they can turn into plaque, a substance that sticks to vessel walls, blocking blood flow and making vessels less flexible.  High-density lipoproteins, HDLs, are considered “good”, helping to metabolize vitamins and minerals and remove LDL from the bloodstream.

Increased cholesterol levels put you at risk for stroke, heart disease and other serious Pentz Family Chiropractic Good Cholesterolhealth issues.  Typically with high cholesterol, statin drugs are prescribed; though recent studies are showing that long-term use poses serious risks.

There are alternatives for controlling cholesterol that don’t include medicine.  Regular exercise and dietary changes can help reduce cholesterol significantly.

  • Beans: helps in lowering LDL cholesterol. A recent study in Canada showed that just one ¾ cup serving of beans, chickpeas, or lentils per day can cut LDL levels by as much as 5 percent.  Beans are full of fiber which helps remove LDL from the blood.  Fiber also helps with digestion and can reduce the risk of colon cancer.
  • Oatmeal: contains LDL-lowering soluble fiber. The fiber helps reduce the amount of “bad” cholesterol that can be absorbed into the blood.  1 ½ cups of oatmeal yields 6 grams of fiber.  5 to 10 grams of fiber is recommended per day to reduce LDLs.  You can pump up the fiber by chopping up an apple or banana for an additional 4 to 5 grams of fiber.
  • Tea: 3 cups of green or black tea, hot or iced, each day gives you the max LDL-lowering benefits. It also provides a significant source of antioxidants called polyphenols that can help ward off certain cancers.  Tea also boosts levels of “good” HDL!
  • Extra-virgin Olive Oil: Most fats we eat contain high levels of LDL cholesterol, but. olive oil actually helps battle the bad cholesterol. You only need 2 tablespoons each day to be beneficial. Be sure to purchase EVOO in a dark glass bottle or can with the words “cold-pressed” on the label.
  • Fish: Salmon, mackerel, sardines, or tuna contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which also help to reduce blood pressure.  2 servings of fish a week is recommended for heart health.  If you are not a fish fan, fish oil or ground flaxseed are another decent source of omega-3s.

Why Chiropractic Care is Being Recommended for Ear Infections

I was recently on a Mom forum where a distraught mother complained about her two-year-old’s chronic ear infections. She was tortured over the notion of giving her daughter yet another antibiotic which seemed to do nothing but guarantee a return of the ear infection.

This Mom’s concerns weren’t unfounded. For decades, the evidence-based research about antibiotics has shown that not only are they ineffective at treating ear infections, but they will actually lead to repeated ear infections in the future. In 2004 the American Academy of Pediatrics began its “watch and wait” approach to treating ear infections with antibiotics.

I was thrilled to read in the comments, under this mother’s post, that many other mothers were suggesting Chiropractic care citing their positive experiences. One Mom reported “My children used to be on antibiotics more than they were off them due to ear infections, sinus infections, strep throat etc. Once we began Chiropractic care we said goodbye to all that drama.

Chiropractors will tell you that they don’t treat ear infections. So how is it that so many parents report that their children under Chiropractic care no longer suffer from ear infections? Among many pediatricians who seek safer options for children, well renowned Dr. Sears recently said that he encourages chiropractic care to avoid the onset of ear infections.

Why? Because misalignment of the spinal bones can cause undue pulling on the child’s neck muscles creating tension to their eustachian tubes. The subsequent dysfunction of these tubes to drain lymphatic fluid causes an increased risk of infection. The Chiropractic adjustment aims to reduce the tension of misalignments all throughout the body–restoring normal physiology.

In an article in Pathways to Family Wellness Magazine, “Chiropractic and Ear Infections: What We Offer Makes a Difference, the author explains, “The purpose of Chiropractic care baby-ear-infection-ear-painis not the treatment of conditions or diseases; rather, it is the
restoration of normal body function. Chiropractors work with the nervous system via gentle spinal adjustments to reduce stress related interferences to the nervous system thereby enhancing overall body function. All systems of the body— muscular, glandular, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, eliminatory, hormonal and immunological—depend on the optimal functioning of the nervous system. With Chiropractic, we focus on improving the nervous system to enhance all the body’s systems.”

Chiropractic adjustments do not treat the symptom or infection. They do not suppress or mask the symptom, but instead they allow the body to regain its natural state of function and health. Infections indicate an overloaded immune system. The best course of action is to support the body in regaining its balanced immune system. Treating the ear infection with antibiotics causes an additional overload to the immune system and can actually create greater havoc, leading to the susceptibility of repeated infections.

The science of physiology has made clear that the body is an intricate ecosystem. A vigorous disruption to any of the body’s systems cannot support long-lasting health, nor does it honor the balance of health within. Chiropractic care is all about the restoration of normal physiological balance. With this balance a child’s immune system will function more efficiently.

While you follow the evidence based recommendations to “watch and wait” follow the scientific recommendations set by normal physiology and support your child’s immunity with safe, gentle and effective Chiropractic adjustments.

How to Boost Immunity and Not Fear the Flu!

Pentz Family Chiropractic Summerville SC Life Center Chiropractor No to Flu_nWhy do we fear the ‘flu season’ every year? Is there really a virus that comes out of hibernation every winter to prey on the unsuspecting? Unlikely. Though year after year the instances of viral and bacterial infections rises through the colder months.

As Americans, especially, 85% of our population could be classified as ‘less than healthy’, in reference to immunity to foreign invaders. Immunity suppressants can manifest as stress, lack of exercise, nutrition in the form of prepackaged meals, environmental pollution including the water we drink, etc. Immune system invaders are everywhere.

An American lifestyle is a fast-paced, high-pressure system that creates increased demands on our time – making us age faster and keeping us chronically inflamed. Excessive use of antibiotics as medicine and in our foods, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, chronic mental stress, all challenge the anti-inflammatory organs and functions of the body, thus once again, depressing our immune system.

What are we to do? What we should do to keep ourselves healthy!

  • Get plenty of sleep to recharge and repair the body
  • Eat your veggies – Supporting the gut means supporting the immune system
  • Incorporate foods for their function
    • Yogurt (probiotic, acidophilus and bifidobacter preferred)
    • Oats (rich in beta glucans)
    • Garlic (contains allican)
    • Seeds, nuts and their oils (has minerals such as zinc and selenium)
    • Whole grains (wealth of B vitamins)
    • Colored fruits and vegetables (rich in beta carotene, vitamins A, C, and E)
    • Fresh wild fish (supplies essential fatty acids, Vitamin D and coenzyme Q-10)
    • Herbs and spices (echinacea, elderberry, ginseng, astraglus, bayberry, hawthorn, licorice root, red clover, tumeric, ginger, golden seal, black cumin seed, etc.)
  • Drink plenty of water so that your fluid systems can run at optimum effectiveness
  • Practice good hygiene
  • Reduce exposure to toxic chemicals and drugs
  • Adequate exercise and elimination of chronic stress will improve your immune status significantly!
  • Get your spine adjusted! – Removing pressure from the spinal nerves by aligning the vertebrae allows the nervous system to function optimally. Research over 3 years showed Chiropractic patients to have a 200% greater immune competence than people who had not received Chiropractic care.

How Today’s Pain Becomes Tomorrow’s….

Is it possible that pain can be your friend? That may sound a little crazy because pain obviously hurts. No one likes this uncomfortable feeling yet upon further examination, you will realize that pain can be your best friend, indicating that something is not right in your body and that you should do something about it before it becomes tomorrow’s deterioration, arthritis, ulcer, heart attack or cancer.

We have been trained to mask pain and keep on going. Over the counter sales of pain killing medications such as aspirin, acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and many others run in the billions of dollars. Unfortunately, these temporary symptom relieving pills can make you feel better in the moment while setting the stage for more serious long term health problems down the road, especially if they keep you from addressing the cause of your pain.

Let’s start with a simple backache, hip pain or leg pain, for example. Many people who “feel” these symptoms for the first time may take one of these drugs to help them feel better in the moment, and then do this for years, never addressing the cause. Finally when the pain gets so severe that it causes a debilitating crisis, that individual may have accumulated deterioration and damage, to go along with their pain, which can affect their entire life.

Pentz Family Chiropractic Summerville PainWhat was a simple problem has now become a more complicated condition that could have been prevented with early Chiropractic intervention. What is worse is that the accumulated intake of these medications can lead to secondary health problems that are even more severe than the underlying cause of the pain.

Long term aspirin use, for example, has been linked to ulcers and blood clotting problems later in life. NSAIDS have been linked to kidney failure, and long term acetaminophen use has been linked to liver failure especially when combined with alcohol. These side effects are well-documented scientifically but unfortunately not well publicized. Many people take these drugs like candy, as a part of their lifestyle, not realizing the consequences of their actions.

Your body was designed to be healthy and function normally throughout your lifetime without pain and without the need for painkilling medication. Your nervous system, the master control, communication and internet hub of your body, connects your brain to your skin, muscles, bones and every organ including your heart and lungs. At nearly three million messages per second your nervous system monitors your inner world and adapts you to your environment. It will send you signals when things are not right, many times in the form of pain. Covering up these warning signals confuses your body and can lead to more severe conditions as you age.

Chiropractic care is very effective for eliminating pain, while also helping your body regenerate and restore the function that can keep you healthy for a lifetime. Top athletes utilize chiropractic care as part of their training and their lifestyle. More importantly, they are proactive in their approach using imbalance as their reason to be checked instead of pain.

Next time you or a loved one experiences pain, don’t just cover it up. Get to the cause with a Chiropractic check up. Better yet, be proactive. Check your balance before you “feel” like you need it. Ask our staff for a simple self test to see if you and your loved ones can benefit from a chiropractic check up.

10 Signs of Nutritional Deficiencies in Children

  1. Depression/Anxiety

Depression and anxiety begins in the brain but can be brought on by nutritional deficiencies. Proteins are made up of amino acids. These amino acids can be found in plant and animal foods.
Amino acids are important because the brain uses them to create neurotransmitters such as serotonin, endorphins, catecholemines and GABA. These neurotransmitters keep us feeling happy and calm instead of depressed and anxious.
A diet complete with high quality protein can help to correct this nutritional balance. You can count protein intake or eat whole meat cuts that include fat and even make broth out of the bones. In severe cases supplementation with specific amino acids may be needed to help support the body.

  1. Hyperactivity

Hyperactivity is related to how the brain processes information and how the body can remain calm at the same time. Children with hyperactivity typically have poor bacterial flora and digestion. This makes it hard for the body to absorb nutrients. It is recommended to avoid processed foods and foods made with food colorings. It is also suggested to enhance natural broths to aid in digestion and to follow a good gut healing protocol that includes a natural probiotic.

  1. Delayed speech

Delayed Speech can be related to a deficiency in B12. Children should not be given a B12 supplement until tested for the specific deficiency, but increased intake of foods rich in B12 are a great alternative. These foods include organ meats, beef, chicken, fish, shellfish, pork, dairy and eggs.paleo diet

  1. Dry Skin/Hair

Dry skin and hair can be related to a deficiency in fat soluble vitamins such as Vitamin A, D, E and K2. This can be accomplished but supplementing with fermented cod liver oil at half a teaspoon per day.

  1. Crowding of teeth

The relationship between crowded teeth and nutritional deficiencies is well-recorded. Dr. Weston Price’s research on this subject found that those children who ate modern, processed foods or whose mother ate poorly during pregnancy, had children who developed poor dental structure and spacing. Those children who ate a traditional diet full of rich fats, complete animal proteins and properly prepared carbohydrates across the board developed even spacing of teeth and even had enough room for wisdom teeth.

  1. Cavities

Cavities are often thought to be a result of too much sugar or candy in the diet. Though this doesn’t help, cavities are found in children deficient in proper mineral and fat soluble vitamins. Purchasing grass-fed meats and dairy versus corn-fed and avoiding highly processed grains is a start.

  1. Frequent colds and flus

A good diet is a great way to prevent sickness. Eating real food and not avoiding germs can build a child’s immune system. Chiropractic adjustments are also a great way to keep the immune system working at one hundred percent, naturally.

  1. Cranky or sporadic emotions

It has been researched that fats (mainly Omega 3s found in wild salmon, sardines, herring, anchovies and mackerel) are vital for good mood stabilization. Good saturated fats from butter and coconut oil help keep these fats in our brain.

Hormones are also a player. Unbalanced hormones can cause us to feel irritable and moody. Carrots help to absorb extra estrogen in the body!

  1. Poor cranial structure or “flat-head” syndrome

Research around the world has found that the development of the cranial bones (just like the development of the palate or teeth crowding) greatly improves when the mother ate a diet high in good fats (including rich saturated fats from animal products), whole proteins from seafood/animal meat and properly prepared grains. Vegetables and fruits were also included in these diets depending on the available season. Those who avoided processed food (including seed and vegetable oils, canned and packaged food) were immune to this problem.

  1. Obesity

When we eat foods that are not nutrient dense, our bodies are hungry. They become starved for good nutrition and that is why we do not feel satisfied. Our bodies are meant to feel satisfied with a balance of all real foods. When we stray away from these foods and start to eat processed food or restrict any macronutrient like fat, carbohydrates or protein that is when we become malnourished.
