October is National Chiropractic Month!

Every October, the American Chiropractic Association, ACA, celebrates Chiropractic and how it helps each person who receives an adjustment. This year we are reaching out to educate the public of the real statics of prescription abuse and addiction.

The numbers are outrageous and astounding.  pentz-family-chiropractic-natl-chiropractic-health-month

#Chiropractic1st is a way to promote the reduction of pain before the problem or addiction to opioids ever begins.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as one in four patients who receive prescription opioids long term for non-cancer pain in primary care settings struggles with addiction. Every day, more than 1,000 people are treated in the ER for misusing prescription opioids. Deaths involving opioids have quadrupled since 1999; in 2014 alone, more than 14,000 people died from overdoses involving the drugs. That same year, another 2 million people abused or were dependent on opioids.

The problem of prescription drug overuse and abuse reaches beyond the general population. New research suggests that the rising prevalence of chronic pain and opioid use by U.S. combat military personnel is cause for serious concern.

We work everyday to help each person heal naturally and prevent and decrease these numbers. #Chiropractic1st

High Cholesterol Levels Managed with these Five Foods

Cholesterol is a waxy substance derived from food.  Low-density lipoproteins, LDLs, are considered “bad” cholesterol, because they can turn into plaque, a substance that sticks to vessel walls, blocking blood flow and making vessels less flexible.  High-density lipoproteins, HDLs, are considered “good”, helping to metabolize vitamins and minerals and remove LDL from the bloodstream.

Increased cholesterol levels put you at risk for stroke, heart disease and other serious Pentz Family Chiropractic Good Cholesterolhealth issues.  Typically with high cholesterol, statin drugs are prescribed; though recent studies are showing that long-term use poses serious risks.

There are alternatives for controlling cholesterol that don’t include medicine.  Regular exercise and dietary changes can help reduce cholesterol significantly.

  • Beans: helps in lowering LDL cholesterol. A recent study in Canada showed that just one ¾ cup serving of beans, chickpeas, or lentils per day can cut LDL levels by as much as 5 percent.  Beans are full of fiber which helps remove LDL from the blood.  Fiber also helps with digestion and can reduce the risk of colon cancer.
  • Oatmeal: contains LDL-lowering soluble fiber. The fiber helps reduce the amount of “bad” cholesterol that can be absorbed into the blood.  1 ½ cups of oatmeal yields 6 grams of fiber.  5 to 10 grams of fiber is recommended per day to reduce LDLs.  You can pump up the fiber by chopping up an apple or banana for an additional 4 to 5 grams of fiber.
  • Tea: 3 cups of green or black tea, hot or iced, each day gives you the max LDL-lowering benefits. It also provides a significant source of antioxidants called polyphenols that can help ward off certain cancers.  Tea also boosts levels of “good” HDL!
  • Extra-virgin Olive Oil: Most fats we eat contain high levels of LDL cholesterol, but. olive oil actually helps battle the bad cholesterol. You only need 2 tablespoons each day to be beneficial. Be sure to purchase EVOO in a dark glass bottle or can with the words “cold-pressed” on the label.
  • Fish: Salmon, mackerel, sardines, or tuna contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which also help to reduce blood pressure.  2 servings of fish a week is recommended for heart health.  If you are not a fish fan, fish oil or ground flaxseed are another decent source of omega-3s.

Many Women Benefit from Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

During the course of pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes innumerable changes biochemically and structurally which can create postural strain and neck and back pain. A brief look at the anatomy of the spine provides insight as to why chiropractic adjustments can facilitate a healthier, more comfortable pregnancy.

The vertebral column is a strong, flexible rod composed of a series of bones called vertebrae which enclose a protect the spinal cord, support the head, and serve as an attachment for the ribs and muscles of the back. This “spine” is able to rotate and move anteriorily, posteriorily and laterally. The vertebral column shows four normal curves, which increase its strength, help maintain balance in the upright position, absorb shock, and help protect the column from fracture.

The spinal cord, which courses down the center of this column conveys sensory impulses from the peripheral nerves to the brain and conducts impulse from the seat of the Central Nervous System, the brain, to all of the peripheral nerves. When an electrical impulse is stimulated in the brain, it travels a neural pathway in the spinal cord. Misalignment of this vertebral column can create pressure on the spinal nerves irritating the surrounding tissue and causing impeded nerve flow, discomfort and/or pain.

3-15-16 Pentz Familiy Chiropractic Summerville SC Chiropractic Care PrenatalOver the course of a forty week gestation, a mother’s weight gain will ideally reach somewhere between 30-40 lbs. This increase in weight can create spinal misalignment and/or postural distortions which in turn affect nerves, muscles and mobility of joints. As the bulk of this weight is deposited in the abdominal area, the mother’s center of gravity shifts forward. In order to compensate, the natural curves of the spine, particularly in the lumbar region, become exaggerated causing “low back pain”.

The hips may also expand laterally to help stabilize the body, putting pressure on the sacroilliac joints. The hormones of pregnancy cause muscles, ligaments, cartilage (such as the symphisis pubis), and even bones to “soften” and become more pliable. Pelvic bones “slip” and can become more easily displaced and/or fixated. In addition, certain round ligaments attach to pelvis bones and then to the uterus as it enlarges with the growth of the baby. When these ligaments are strained or torqued, as with sudden movement or “rolling over”, they can cause even more discomfort for the pregnant mother.

Benefits of Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care can:

  1. Correct vertebral misalignment and relieve pressure with gentle and effective adjustments.
  2. Help ensure that pelvic bones are properly aligned, facilitating a quicker, easier delivery.
  3. Re-establish the natural position and mobility of the joints.

Provide freedom from interference of normal nerve energy which is vital for the development of a healthy baby and mother.

Why Chiropractic Care is Being Recommended for Ear Infections

I was recently on a Mom forum where a distraught mother complained about her two-year-old’s chronic ear infections. She was tortured over the notion of giving her daughter yet another antibiotic which seemed to do nothing but guarantee a return of the ear infection.

This Mom’s concerns weren’t unfounded. For decades, the evidence-based research about antibiotics has shown that not only are they ineffective at treating ear infections, but they will actually lead to repeated ear infections in the future. In 2004 the American Academy of Pediatrics began its “watch and wait” approach to treating ear infections with antibiotics.

I was thrilled to read in the comments, under this mother’s post, that many other mothers were suggesting Chiropractic care citing their positive experiences. One Mom reported “My children used to be on antibiotics more than they were off them due to ear infections, sinus infections, strep throat etc. Once we began Chiropractic care we said goodbye to all that drama.

Chiropractors will tell you that they don’t treat ear infections. So how is it that so many parents report that their children under Chiropractic care no longer suffer from ear infections? Among many pediatricians who seek safer options for children, well renowned Dr. Sears recently said that he encourages chiropractic care to avoid the onset of ear infections.

Why? Because misalignment of the spinal bones can cause undue pulling on the child’s neck muscles creating tension to their eustachian tubes. The subsequent dysfunction of these tubes to drain lymphatic fluid causes an increased risk of infection. The Chiropractic adjustment aims to reduce the tension of misalignments all throughout the body–restoring normal physiology.

In an article in Pathways to Family Wellness Magazine, “Chiropractic and Ear Infections: What We Offer Makes a Difference, the author explains, “The purpose of Chiropractic care baby-ear-infection-ear-painis not the treatment of conditions or diseases; rather, it is the
restoration of normal body function. Chiropractors work with the nervous system via gentle spinal adjustments to reduce stress related interferences to the nervous system thereby enhancing overall body function. All systems of the body— muscular, glandular, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, eliminatory, hormonal and immunological—depend on the optimal functioning of the nervous system. With Chiropractic, we focus on improving the nervous system to enhance all the body’s systems.”

Chiropractic adjustments do not treat the symptom or infection. They do not suppress or mask the symptom, but instead they allow the body to regain its natural state of function and health. Infections indicate an overloaded immune system. The best course of action is to support the body in regaining its balanced immune system. Treating the ear infection with antibiotics causes an additional overload to the immune system and can actually create greater havoc, leading to the susceptibility of repeated infections.

The science of physiology has made clear that the body is an intricate ecosystem. A vigorous disruption to any of the body’s systems cannot support long-lasting health, nor does it honor the balance of health within. Chiropractic care is all about the restoration of normal physiological balance. With this balance a child’s immune system will function more efficiently.

While you follow the evidence based recommendations to “watch and wait” follow the scientific recommendations set by normal physiology and support your child’s immunity with safe, gentle and effective Chiropractic adjustments.

How to Boost Immunity and Not Fear the Flu!

Pentz Family Chiropractic Summerville SC Life Center Chiropractor No to Flu_nWhy do we fear the ‘flu season’ every year? Is there really a virus that comes out of hibernation every winter to prey on the unsuspecting? Unlikely. Though year after year the instances of viral and bacterial infections rises through the colder months.

As Americans, especially, 85% of our population could be classified as ‘less than healthy’, in reference to immunity to foreign invaders. Immunity suppressants can manifest as stress, lack of exercise, nutrition in the form of prepackaged meals, environmental pollution including the water we drink, etc. Immune system invaders are everywhere.

An American lifestyle is a fast-paced, high-pressure system that creates increased demands on our time – making us age faster and keeping us chronically inflamed. Excessive use of antibiotics as medicine and in our foods, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, chronic mental stress, all challenge the anti-inflammatory organs and functions of the body, thus once again, depressing our immune system.

What are we to do? What we should do to keep ourselves healthy!

  • Get plenty of sleep to recharge and repair the body
  • Eat your veggies – Supporting the gut means supporting the immune system
  • Incorporate foods for their function
    • Yogurt (probiotic, acidophilus and bifidobacter preferred)
    • Oats (rich in beta glucans)
    • Garlic (contains allican)
    • Seeds, nuts and their oils (has minerals such as zinc and selenium)
    • Whole grains (wealth of B vitamins)
    • Colored fruits and vegetables (rich in beta carotene, vitamins A, C, and E)
    • Fresh wild fish (supplies essential fatty acids, Vitamin D and coenzyme Q-10)
    • Herbs and spices (echinacea, elderberry, ginseng, astraglus, bayberry, hawthorn, licorice root, red clover, tumeric, ginger, golden seal, black cumin seed, etc.)
  • Drink plenty of water so that your fluid systems can run at optimum effectiveness
  • Practice good hygiene
  • Reduce exposure to toxic chemicals and drugs
  • Adequate exercise and elimination of chronic stress will improve your immune status significantly!
  • Get your spine adjusted! – Removing pressure from the spinal nerves by aligning the vertebrae allows the nervous system to function optimally. Research over 3 years showed Chiropractic patients to have a 200% greater immune competence than people who had not received Chiropractic care.

Best and Worst Halloween Candies!

We believe knowledge is power, especially when it comes to what our families and communities are consuming!  We do our best to educate our patients on healthy choices even when it comes to what Halloween candies they are handing out! 🙂

Top 10 Worst Halloween Candy

  1. Candy Corn: Brach’s Confections brand

WARNING: Contains Titanium Dioxide, a metal used as a pigment also in cosmetics and vitamins.  Originally a glass-like structured man-made product that is completely insoluble.  Its consumption has shown to disturb normal immune function.  So…it’s like eating ground up glass…

  1. Nerds: Willy Wonka Candy Factory brand

WARNING: Contains Carmine, a food coloring additive also found in pharmaceuticals.  Carmine is derived from female cochineal beetles.  There is overwhelming research that this additive causes severe allergic reactions including long-term asthma and anaphylactic shock, which has led to its BAN in some countries such as France and Sweden.Pentz Family Chiropractic Summerville candy

  1. Butterfinger: Nestle brand

WARNING: Contains TBHQ (Tertiary Butylhydroquinone), an artificial anti-oxidant that keeps food tasting “fresh”.  Where else can you find TBHQ?  Yes, it’s in lighter fluid.

  1. Twizzlers: Hershey brand

WARNING: Contains food coloring Red 3 that has various additives as all food colorings do, including aluminum.  Evidence shows consumption to cause tumors and has been linked to Alzheimer’s as studies have found aluminum deposits in the brains of its victims.  Red 3 in particular was recommended to be BANNED during the Reagan administration.

  1. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: Hershey brand

WARNING: Contains Soy lecithin.  Soy is one of the most genetically engineered organisms on the planet, and has shown toxicity in animals.

  1. M&M’s: Mars brand

WARNING: Contains PGPR (PALSGAARD 4150), a yellow viscous liquid derived from castor oil and used as a substitute for cocoa butter.  Research does not know what long-term affects PGPR has on a person.  I prefer REAL cocoa butter to castor oil, wouldn’t you?

  1. Lifesavers: Wrigley brand

WARNING: Contains High Fructose Corn Syrup, which we have all heard to avoid, but why?  HFCS is not absorbed the same way cane sugar is absorbed, thus proven to literally punch holes in the intestinal lining, allowing “leaking” out.  This can lead to increased appetite and weight gain not to mention diabetes, cancer, dementia, etc.  Not to mention, HFCS can even contain mercury!

  1. Tootsie Rolls: Tootsie Roll Industries brand

WARNING: Contains partially hydrogenated soybean oil.  This is a completely man made substance which causes cellular crisis within the body, leading to: cancer, because the product interferes with the enzymes your body uses to fight against cancer; decreased immune function, because the body has an immune reaction against the product; and even reproductive problems because again, the chemical interferes with the enzymes used to produce sex hormones.

  1. Skittles: Wrigley brand

WARNING: Contains Hydrogenated palm kernel oil.  This oil has been linked to Alzheimer’s, colon cancer and infertility.  This product is completely banned in restaurants across the nation… but still on our grocery shelves.

  1. Snickers: Mars brand

WARNING: Contains modified cornstarch.  The modified part meaning different chemicals are used in its creation including: hydrochloric acid (corrosive used to remove rust), sodium hydroxide (chemical used in making detergents and drain cleaners) and potassium hydroxide (used to make alkaline batteries).

Increased Anxiety Associated with Sitting Down?

According to research published in the June 2015 journal BMC Public Health, lower energy activities that involve sitting down are associated with and increased risk of anxiety.  Many studies have shown that sedentary behavior is associated with physical health problems like obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis.  But there has been little research regarding the link between sedentary behavior and mental health.

We are seeing an increase in anxiety symptoms in our modern society, which seems to parallel the increase in sedentary behavior.  Thus, we were interested to see whether these two factors were in fact linked” said Megan Teychenne, the lead researcher at Deakin University’s Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research. In Australia.  (Side note: Australia has a higher rate of obesity than the U.Pentz Family Chiropractic Summerville SC Sedentary-LifestyleS.) “Also, since research has shown positive associations between sedentary behavior and depressive symptoms, this was another foundation for further investigating the link between sedentary behavior and anxiety symptoms.”

Researchers looked at the results of nine different studies.  These studies analyzed television viewing/computer use, sitting while on transport and work-related sitting.  Two studies included children and the rest included adults.

Results of the studies:

  • Five of the nine studies found that an increase in sedentary behavior was associated with an increased risk of anxiety.
  • Four studies found that total sitting time was associated with increased risk of anxiety.
  • 36% of high school aged students that had more than two hours of screen time were more likely to experience anxiety compared to those who had less than two hours.

The research team suggests that the link between sitting and anxiety could be due to disturbances in sleep patterns, social withdrawal and/or poor metabolic health.  “It is important that we understand the behavioral factors that may be linked to anxiety- in order to be able to develop evidence-based strategies in preventing/managing this illness”, Teychenne said.
